Taken on a summer’s evening in the northern fjords of Norway as the sun was dropping in the skies. Being north of the Arctic Circle, it did not drop much lower than in this image, holding the lovely golden tones for a prolonged period. Although this was mid summer (early July), the snow had only just melted 2-3 weeks prior.

Shots from the vault: Back in 2009, I had just completed my cycle ride from London to Nordkapp in Norway, some 2.5k miles away. Following completion of this journey, I took a ferry from Honningsvåg to Hammerfest, where I spent these evening before heading on to Tromsø the following morning. I was treated to a spectacular light show that evening as the sun bounced along the horizon. Being north of the Arctic Circle and mid-summer, the sun never dropped below this level.

After trekking a few miles from a small car park at Huisinis, which itself was at the end of a long single track B road, I camped in a very isolated position, looking over at the Isle of Scarp.
The following morning, I awoke at 3.20am and walked a further 2 miles, to the end of the peninsula, to watch the majesty of the sun rising over the horizon in absolute solitude. The warm, golden light reflected on the rocks in front of me, silhouetting the distant mountains. This image was a long exposure (201 seconds) as I wanted to soften the choppy waters and elongate the few clouds on the horizon.

I drove around Harris on my first evening, looking for the right vantage point for an end of day shot. I spoke to a local farmer, who recommended an isolate beach situated on the far side of his land. Once there, I had the whole place to myself and perhaps one of the finest sunsets I have been fortunate enough to witness. The colours were so vibrant, the water looked like it was gold, lapping against my feet.

The image truly does not do justice to the scene. It was one of the most incredible sunsets I have ever seen in Harris. It lasted for ages. Usually, the sun drops within an hour (hence a golden hour) but this last considerably longer, due to the longitude. This image is made up of 5 images stitched together, so the master RAW file is over 200MB, so I could fill an entire wall with this panoramic.

I took this shot whilst standing on a manmade, floating island, on Lake Titicaca, close to Puno in Bolivia. The locals, descended from the Spanish and the Incas, built the Uros Floating Islands from reeds, as well as the shelter you can see in this image. In the background, you can see one of the locals rowing her boat with her baby strapped to her back.

A few years ago, I was in the US to shoot a TV commercial for VW. I took a couple of days out after 5 days of filming and wondered over to Death Valley. I was incredibly lucky to be there as the weather turn from bone dry to stormy. This is a short while before the heavens open and flooded many of the roads in the National Park.

West Witterings – Shot 2
Following on from my last entry, here is another shot from the sequence I shot in West Sussex, at West Witterings beach in December 2015. This shot was taken using a Lee Filter Big Stopper about 10 minutes after the previous shot. You can see the rain falling in the distance, beneath the cloud. Quite a surreal scene.

Shortly afterwards, the sun climbed high enough in the sky and started to light the clouds above the main bank. I had to wait another half an hour until the sun had completely cleared the main bank of cloud in the scene and that created a completely new view of Witterings. Truly a stunning morning.

West Witterings – Shot 1
Before leaving the UK for Christmas with my family in Singapore, I headed down to West Witterings, one of my favourite childhood beaches. The morning was cold, wind lashed and stormy. All of which made for fantastic clouds and changes in light.
The image for today’s shot of the day is one of a series of five shots I took that morning, that I will publish over the next few entries. This was the moment the overhead storm relented momentarily, giving the sun a brief reprieve to broke through the cloud and washed the beach in golden light.
Warning, if you head to Witterings, remember to take £1 coin or change with you as you have to pay to drive into the car park behind the beach. Otherwise, it is a long walk.
