Shot for the Day (09 March 2019)

Last morning in Devon for a while and the weather was meant to be bad. As I drove towards Dartmoor the fog was think and almost impenetrable. I ended up getting lost on the moors after taking a wrong turn. However, once back on track, the fog gave way to clear skies around Haytor.

Leaving the car in the nearby car park, situated a short walk from Haytor,.  The imposing granite stack was covered in lichens and mosses, holding an imposing position over Dartmoor.  Apparently, these rocky granite outcrops, or tors, were formed over 280 million years ago.

I was recently back down in Devon and took this opportunity to do a few early morning shoots of new places.

This one is of Daymark, in Kingswear Devon, which was built in 1864 by the Dartmouth Harbour Commissioners. It is a hollow, octagonal tower, 24m tall, constructed of limestone. It was built as a guide to mariners to the position of the harbour entrance and is visible for many miles out to sea.

Part of the Devon set from my time there in August. This was taken in Paignton, about 20 mins drive further south from Exeter than Teignmouth. Both towns have piers but Paignton was blessed with a more impressive sunrise the morning I was there.

This shot was taken moments after the sun crept over the horizon and was a long exposure as I was looking to create the illusion of a vanishing point aligned with the end of the pier.

The shot below was taken about 45 minutes later, from the other side of the pier. Again, I employed a long exposure to fill the vast sky with movement. The golden hour had past by the time I took this shot, with the cooler blue tones more apparent.

One morning looking out east across Badía de Pollença.  This was a while ago, whilst in Majorca, when I was up before sunrise one summer’s day, watching the boat gently bobbing on the calm waters of the bay.  Would love to be there right now, enjoying the warm air and stunning view.

After trekking a few miles from a small car park at Huisinis, which itself was at the end of a long single track B road, I camped in a very isolated position, looking over at the Isle of Scarp.

The following morning, I awoke at 3.20am and walked a further 2 miles, to the end of the peninsula, to watch the majesty of the sun rising over the horizon in absolute solitude. The warm, golden light reflected on the rocks in front of me, silhouetting the distant mountains.  This image was a long exposure (201 seconds) as I wanted to soften the choppy waters and elongate the few clouds on the horizon.

Having had a succession of great weather days, the Scottish summer finally set in on my third day in the Isle of Harris and Lewis. I was up well before 4am and had been walking around the beach looking for a good spot to shoot from, without disturbing the sand. This shot was taken at just after 5am, just as I was about to give in. The rain had been gradually falling since dawn broke and I was sure that there would not be a decent image to capture under such circumstance. I am glad I persevered. The light in this picture is quite eerie but I like it.

Machu Picchu at dawn, taken back in 2007 on my medium format film camera.  This image is around the same size as the actual transparency.  There were a lot more people there but most of them were standing in a line next to me taking a similar shot to me.

If you have not seen Machu Picchu, it is one of those special places you should try to see in your lifetime, especially if you are able to trek to it along the Inca trail.

West Witterings – Shot 2

Following on from my last entry, here is another shot from the sequence I shot in West Sussex, at West Witterings beach in December 2015.  This shot was taken using a Lee Filter Big Stopper about 10 minutes after the previous shot. You can see the rain falling in the distance, beneath the cloud.  Quite a surreal scene.

Shortly afterwards, the sun climbed high enough in the sky and started to light the clouds above the main bank.  I had to wait another half an hour until the sun had completely cleared the main bank of cloud in the scene and that created a completely new view of Witterings.  Truly a stunning morning.
