Shot for the Day (20 March 2017)

I was standing on the edge of Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake at a dizzy altitude of 3,811 m, when the girl in this photograph approached me and asked if I would take a picture of her.  This was in 2003, so this shot was on 120 film, certainly well before the widespread usage of digital cameras. I doubt she will ever see this image, unless she somehow managed to find my blog.

If you ever decide to see South America, I strongly recommend that you visit Lake Titicaca, on the border of Peru and Bolivia. The lake is beautiful, with the Andes scraping the sky behind them in the distance.

Walking along the beach in Exmouth last week, the clouds took on a pattern similar to the sand bumps on the shore.  My new Formatt-Hitech filter gave a warm purple tone instead of the customary cold blue of the Lee filters, lifting the colour of the scene. I was so pre-occupied with the scene that I did not notice the progressive surf.  Moments later, a wave washed in from my left and soaked me to the knee.  Worth it though.

Low tide on Exmouth beach over the weekend.  The water was low enough to reveal this concrete jetty, covered in very green seaweed.  A long exposure blurred the sky and left the water a milky, glassy texture.  You can just make out a seagull at the end of the jetty.  It stood there almost motionless for the 260 second exposure.

Walking between Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton over the weekend, in south Devon, I spotted this interesting rocky outcrop.  The sun was beginning to drop to my right and threw an captivating shaft of light across the scene.  The tide was washing close to the top of my Wellington boots and I had a camera bag full of kit precariously balanced on the rocks next to me.  I had just enough time to grab a couple of shots before having to clamber up the rocks.  Definitely worth it.

Whilst out one evening in Devon, I was walking along the Jurassic coastline when the light made me stop in my tracks.  Using a Lee Filter Big Stopper, I softened the rolling waves into silky smooth wisps, lapping against the groyne.

As the light changed, the waves became ever more energetic.  Soon, the pinky orange hues gave way to the grey blues post sunset, making the whole scene feel palpably colder.

From the same session as the shot for yesterday at Bentham beach in Devon, this one was taken as the sun dipped into the cloud on the horizon.  The fiery sky looked stunning.  Made me feel as though I was back on the equator again, just without the incessant heat to manage.

Next time I am in Devon I hope to head to Thurlestone.  There is a natural stone arch, which could make for an interesting near to mid point of interest.

This is Bentham beach in southern Devon.  I took this a few weeks ago when I was in the area.  This was taken about 30 minutes after the sun had dropped below the horizon.  I should probably remove the light sources on the island and cliff top to make the image a little cleaner.  The cloud and colour of the sky reminds me more of a tropical sunset than the UK.  Could be due to the hint of magenta in the heavens.  Well worth a visit if you can find it.

A couple of other extra long exposure shots from last weekend.  This one was taken close to the Millennium Bridge.  As the river was low, I was able to walk down to the beach, to take a lower angle shot of the Thames and Shard. The sun had finally broken through the clod, albeit temporarily, to illuminate the scene and bath the Shard in light.

This next shot was of HMS Belfast, across the Thames, of the Walkie Talkie building with the Gherkin also visible.  As the ship was floating on the river, it tended to bob around, so I diminished the length of the exposure to compensate.  You can see this in comparison to the tub boats in the foreground, which are blurred.

West Witterings – Shot 2

Following on from my last entry, here is another shot from the sequence I shot in West Sussex, at West Witterings beach in December 2015.  This shot was taken using a Lee Filter Big Stopper about 10 minutes after the previous shot. You can see the rain falling in the distance, beneath the cloud.  Quite a surreal scene.

Shortly afterwards, the sun climbed high enough in the sky and started to light the clouds above the main bank.  I had to wait another half an hour until the sun had completely cleared the main bank of cloud in the scene and that created a completely new view of Witterings.  Truly a stunning morning.
