Taken a few days ago on the beach at Budleigh Salterton, the fisherman in the picture very kindly asked if he was ruining my shot by fishing in front of me. Normally one for trying to avoid human presence in my images, this one worked out very nicely. The lonely fisherman occupies the space between sky and sea.
Spent most of the last week in Gothenburg, so decided to capitalise on the great weather last Friday and went up to Klippan on the ferry. From there, I walked a couple of kilometres to a great vantage point where I watched the sun drop behind the horizon. Aside from the plethora of mosquitoes on hand, the experience was very serene, as only Sweden can be.
Taken a short while after sunset, during the blue hour (as opposed to the golden hour of sunset), this is a view of Singapore. The tall buildings are part of the CBD (Central Business District), where I used to work. In the foreground, the illuminated white is the ArtScience Museum.
My lasting memory of taking this image is that I recall it being an especially warm evening, even for Singapore.
Walking along the beach in Exmouth last week, the clouds took on a pattern similar to the sand bumps on the shore. My new Formatt-Hitech filter gave a warm purple tone instead of the customary cold blue of the Lee filters, lifting the colour of the scene. I was so pre-occupied with the scene that I did not notice the progressive surf. Moments later, a wave washed in from my left and soaked me to the knee. Worth it though.
I am trying to improve my cityscape portfolio, especially of London as it is my home city. This weekend, I went walking for hours and ended up back at Tower Bridge. The streets were teeming with thousands of tourists and people on half term holiday. After much searching, I found a small platform on the Thames walk, overlooking Tower Bridge and the London Assembly. The clouds framing the Shard were perfect for a portrait of the scene.
Last couple of shots from Iceland. On the day I finally completed my circumnavigation of the island on my trusty cycle, I went for a wonder around the shoreline of Reykjavik. I was treated to the most glorious light across the bay. The yellow light house a beacon at twilight just as it was at night.
Prior to arriving in the capital, I had camped on the shoreline of Jökulsárlón. This image was taken close to midnight. As Iceland is just south of the Arctic Circle, it has little darkness in the summer. However, even though it was meant to be the hottest time of the year, it was chilly, with temperatures still very much in single figures that evening.
Last weekend, the UK was battered with gale force winds and heavy rain. I headed down to Sidmouth in Devon to try and capture some of nature’s drama. The first shot was from a rock jetty by the sea. I used a Little Stopper, which caused an interesting colour cast in the image. The sea was a deep red from the churned up sea bed.
I move along the beach to grab this shot of the waves breaking against the concrete causeway. The evening sun was behind me but the clouds to the east reflected the evening glow, behind the crashing waves.
I was almost at the hotel after a long drive to Death Valley from Los Angeles,when I spotted this scene. It was insanely hot, well over 40 degrees Celsius but Death Valley is such a fascinating place, I had to stop and grab a couple of shots before sunset.
The shot above was moments before the sun dropped behind a cloud. The one below was a little later, as the sky was lit up with the afterglow.
I heartily recommend a trip to Death Valley to anyone. Just a word of warning. Make sure you have a car with air conditioning and that you can handle temperatures of over 50 degrees Celsius as it hit 125 degrees Fahrenheit (51.7 degrees Celsius the following day).
Half an hour after the previous entry was taken, the Hong Kong skyline looked like this. Long exposure (16 seconds) has softened the water and sky. This was also taken from Kowloon, southwards towards Hong Kong island. Definitely one of my favourite places on earth.
