Pilau Ubin rain

Yesterday, we took a family outing to an island off the north eastern coast of Singapore called Pilau Ubin.  It feels more akin to neighbouring Malaysia than the ultra-modern Singapore and as such, has a certain charm that is lost in this country’s modernity.

Unfortunately for us, being in the midst of the rainy season, the heavens opened as we were en route to the island from Changi.  The shot above was from the pier we were deposited on at Pilau Ubin.  Our boat was reversing out into the emerald green bay as the rain lashed the landscape.

After a very wet cycle ride around the island, we caught a boat back to the mainland in the early evening  The rain had finally stopped and we were afforded a dramatic view of Pilau Ubin to the north, as the heavy rain clouds circled the seascape, in preparation for another storm.

All shots were taken on my Nokia 1020, which did a pretty decent job.  However, I will definitely return on a less inclement day and take my camera kit as the views on the island are very contrasting to mainland Singapore.

Following on from my last entry, this was taken a few minutes prior to the last shot (below) in Alcudia, Mallorca. Unfortunately, I was not well positioned for the sunrise, which was behind the head of the peninsula, to my left.  The reason for this was main due to the fact that the westerly facing headland was several kilometres on the other side of a private golf course and I had no idea how long it would have taken me to walk there.  Has anybody ever made this journey?

One thing that resonated with me the most about this particular dawn was the strength of the yellow in the sky.  Singapore tends to be far more orange due to pollutants in the atmosphere.

Dawn on Vancouver Island

Dawn on a stretch of beach a few miles south of Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada.  No another person around for miles, just the gentle lapping of the Pacific ocean against the shore.  Mist was rising from the land, creating a very other-worldly effect.

Holiday season was well over and the temperature was only a just in double digits. Still, one of my favourite beaches in Canada.

Exmouth end of day

After several months based in Singapore, I miss certain things about the UK. A quiet beach and a cool breeze are definitely two of them. This was shot at one of my favour beaches, Exmouth, on a Spring evening. The large beach was devoid of any movement as the opalescent sky and previous inclement weather had chased all the fair weather beach combers. When I took this shot, the sun was almost gone, giving the sea an eerie hew on long exposure.

Bantham Bay sunset

Dreaming of the summer nights at Bantham Bay in Devon, looking into the sun with no one around.   Actually, the reason there was no one around was because it was Easter 2013 and it was bloody freezing.  Still, one way to get such a beautiful beach all to oneself.

An early morning slow sunrise over the channel in east Devon.  There was very little movement in the water and yet the clouds moved at a quickened pace above me.

This shots was taken about 30 minutes after dawn had broken, just as the sun finally cleared the bank of cloud hugging the horizon.

Following on from my last shot of the day on August 10th, this shot was take a few hours earlier at Ayrmer Cove, just as the sun was setting behind the peninsula.  The magic of the moment was having this entire beautiful scene to myself, something that rarely happens at sunset.

I had originally intended to photograph one of my favourite beaches in southern Devon but it was the wrong time of year for the sunset across the opening of the cove.  Instead, I retraced my steps by a few miles to Ayrmer Cove and waited until around half an hour after the sun dropped below the horizon, to capture this long exposure shot.

Another early rise shot on Dawlish Warren.  The clouds had meant the sunrise was not as spectacular as I had hoped, so I tried my Lee Big Stopper.  This created the pleasant softening of the clouds and water.  It also added a blue cast to the image, which I chose to preserve.
