Shot for the Day (05 February 2017)
Saturday walk along the River Thames and we finally had some clement weather, albeit not balmy.
I was trying out my new 25mm lens with a Firecrest 3.0 HD this weekend. Not the classic streaking clouds shot but was quite interesting. I have started to do more HDR images (this is not one of them) as I have seem some great YouTube videos on how to combine images subtly.

I was in Stockholm at the end of last week and wondered down to the harbour in search of a morning shot before the working day commenced. The weather forecast had stated it would be a clear, sunny day, yet as I stood on the quayside, it started to snow gently. As the opalescent cloud drifted off in a south easterly direction, the dawn light emerged along with some dawn colours.
The second shot below I took a short while later, with a Lee Filter Little Stopper (x6 ND filter), to lengthen the exposure. I lost the colour in the clouds but the movement of the ferry and sky made for an interesting alternative version of the same scene.

A sky full of clouds.
After crossing Europe on my bicycle in 2009, I took the Hurtigruten ferry from Honningsvåg (and the North Cape) to Tromsø. I was only on the ferry for a day but the landscape in mid summer was stunning. As we were north of the Arctic Circle, we did not lose the light. The shot above was take somewhere in the archipelago around 10pm.
I aim to return in the winter, when the landscape is covered in snow and under the Aurora Borealis.

Strange shapes in the desert. Whilst crossing the Atacama desert in Bolivia, I passed through the Salar de Uyuni salt flats. In the vastness of the white desert, strange shapes were cut into the floor. Blocks of salt were extracted and left in the sun to dry before being removed and sold. The remaining angular shapes were gradually filled with the water that lingered beneath the surface.
In the wet season, the floor of the salt flats becomes flooded and the looks like an impossibly huge mirror, making it hard to know which is heaven and earth.

Still in the Canadian Rockies, I tried to shoot the famous Moraine Lake, situated close to Lake Louise, a few times but to no avail. In the end, it took me three attempts to capture this dawn scene. First time, I wondered into the forest jutting out into the lake on the right. I was spooked by a bear and decided a shot was not worth a mauling. The second attempt was marred by terrible weather. Third time lucky. The light lasted about 5 minutes before clouding over.
The solitude of the morning was somewhat dispensed with when I was interviewed by a Japanese film crew, who turned up too late to capture the dawn and wanted to use my photographs.
I was staying in a small motel in Banff and had scouted this location out the previous day. The light was falling to my right on the lakeside but I loved the dawn vanilla skies above the mountain on the other side of the lake.

Half an hour after the previous entry was taken, the Hong Kong skyline looked like this. Long exposure (16 seconds) has softened the water and sky. This was also taken from Kowloon, southwards towards Hong Kong island. Definitely one of my favourite places on earth.

Shot for the Day (07 August 2016)
From the same session as the shot for yesterday at Bentham beach in Devon, this one was taken as the sun dipped into the cloud on the horizon. The fiery sky looked stunning. Made me feel as though I was back on the equator again, just without the incessant heat to manage.
Next time I am in Devon I hope to head to Thurlestone. There is a natural stone arch, which could make for an interesting near to mid point of interest.
Shot for the Day (06 August 2016)
This is Bentham beach in southern Devon. I took this a few weeks ago when I was in the area. This was taken about 30 minutes after the sun had dropped below the horizon. I should probably remove the light sources on the island and cliff top to make the image a little cleaner. The cloud and colour of the sky reminds me more of a tropical sunset than the UK. Could be due to the hint of magenta in the heavens. Well worth a visit if you can find it.
